HISTORY OF SAGE ACT!
When
ACT! first came out in the late 80'ties, it ran under MS-Dos, and
was written by Contact Software International in the USA.
When
it grew into a Windows Version it was sold to Symantec Corporation
who built up a powerful support team of ACT! Certified Consultants.
With their huge fiscal ability and very clever developers, Symantec
turned ACT! for Windows into a powerful multi-user Application
and brought in some fantastic data sharing features with outstanding
reporting capability.
Between 1996 and 2004, this was the version known correctly as
"Symantec ACT!". Albeit, some latter-day consultants however,
not wishing to use the Symantec name (ostensibly to both show
a degree of respect for the original owners of ACT! and also for the
sake of nostalgia and to an extent, marketing decorum) tend to refer
to that version as "Classic ACT!" or "ACT! Classic".
It was
then sold under a special 4-year option/license/agreement (still
correctly named Symantec ACT!) to SalesLogix Corporation, a business
founded by the original owners of Contact Software International who
had meanwhile offered a "big brother" to ACT! called "SalesLogix".
(SalesLogix is ostensibly Account Record driven and is not
essentially a People Centric application. Hence Customer
Relationship Management rather than Contact Management.)
SalesLogix was of course a separate Sales Solution and so they
offered the products, ACT! and SalesLogix, under a brand new company
they called Interact Commerce Corporation.
Interact Commerce Corporation was later bought out by Best Software,
Inc.
Finally, up to present, Best Software's Sales Solutions were bought
by Sage PLC and the entire products were re-written as Dot Net
Applications with the data no longer being stored in various
Borland formats, but exclusively then in the more efficient,
Microsoft SQL format.
ACT!
was ALWAYS of
course, not only "best of breed", as THE salesman's
tool of choice, as it was the package which started the whole genre of sales force automation...
but even today, Sage ACT! is still the World's Best Contact Manager
because of its many powerful and terrific features and benefits and
finally of course, its absolute simplicity of use.
In a
nutshell, ACT! has a great heritage, it has matured nicely and at
the same time, it has always remaining state-of-the-art having
proven itself to be the right tool for so many kinds of businesses
throughout the world with lots of foreign versions in different
languages.
